10 Best Male Country Singers Of All Time

That high lonesome sound, that drone like a train whistle, that deep twang – all of it lends to the unmistakable sound of country music.

An American tradition for over a century, country music has seen some of the best artists of all time show their skills in a relatable, melodic genre that’s captured the hearts of millions.

The gentle whimper of a steel guitar is a staple of country music, as is the slow sawing of a fiddle. But there’s arguably nothing more important to a country song than the skills of the vocalist telling their story to the crowd.

Whether it’s about losing a love, having a drink, or battling the devil in a contest of fiddle-sawing supremacy, country singers have made their mark on history over time.

Which country singer is the best? Today we’ll examine this loaded question and try to pin down the true kings of country music.

How Do We Choose Our Rankings?

When it comes to country music artists, the term art is integral to the discussion about who ranks where. There is some subjectivity in play, and thus everyone’s own list will be different.

Ours will be driven first and foremost by vocal talent – this doesn’t necessarily mean the widest vocal range or the most expertly controlled vibrato.

It can mean recognizability, or a vocal timbre that lends itself well to the spirit of country music and the ambiance these songs look to create.

We’ll also consider a singer’s influence – there’s a lot to consider here, in terms of both their vocal abilities and how their ability to tell stories with their singing have inspired future generations of singers.

Longevity and lists of hits are also important. If a singer has topped charts and sent albums flying off shelves for decades, they’ll rank a little higher.

Finally, we’ll consider the crossover appeal artists have. If their presence could inspire rockers or their ballads could tug at the heartstrings of pop fans, they’ll have a little more pull in terms of ranking power.

After all, those who help country’s popularity grow are very important to the genre.

Each artist will be given a rating on a scale of 1-5 out of 5, based on their total talent, influence, longevity, and crossover appeal.

Since we’re talking about vocalists, an artist may receive a score lower than 5 – that doesn’t mean their songwriting or instrument skills aren’t important, just that they don’t tie into the ranking as we’re focusing on singing.

Crank up the radio, roll the truck’s windows down, and raise a beer – it’s time to discuss the top male country singers of all time.

Top Male Country Singers: Who Made Our Top 10 List?

Johnny Cash

The man in black tops our list as he does many dedicated to the best country vocalists of all time.

Maybe it was his low baritone range that rumbled like the sound of a truck engine down a dirt road. Maybe it was his willingness to tackle topics like burning love, incarceration, and death through his songs.

Or maybe it was a combination of both of these factors – in any case, Johnny Cash is our pick for country’s best male singer of all time.

It’s hard to beat Johnny Cash in a contest of country music mastery. He was so respected, he even crossed over into polar opposite genres outside the country music bubble, such as rock and gospel.

Hank Williams

Tall, brooding, and complete with an iconic cowboy hat, Hank Williams captivated the hearts and minds of country music fans during his short but impactful career.

With an unmistakable tenor twang that echoed tales of tear-jerking loneliness and playfully romantic invitations, Williams mastered both heartfelt ballads and upbeat tunes.

Though his career may not have been a long one, his legacy is unmistakable. Though his battles with alcoholism arguably held his career back, it didn’t stop him from setting the country music scene ablaze before the age of 29.

Despite missing our top spot, Hank Williams had everything necessary to be the perfect country music singer – presence, vocal talent, and the ability to touch a listener’s heart.

George Jones

Twang doesn’t always have to come with a tenor range – George Jones proved this by mixing a contra-baritone rumble with a vocal quality that almost sounded like a steel guitar speaking words.

Jones is another artist that had hits all across the spectrum. He sang about the type of love that didn’t end until a person’s eyes closed forever, and even when he hit his old age, he bounced back with the rebellious sound of a singer who still had fire in his veins and a lot of verses left to share with the world.

Another true legend in every sense of the term, George Jones – also known as “The Possum” was as country as country could be, and left some

George Strait

With over 50 #1 hits to his name, George Strait has personified transgenerational success in the country music genre. His moniker of King George was earned by accomplishments and longevity.

With over 90 percent of his career singles reaching the top 10 list, Strait has sung about love, Texas, and everything in between.

Beating the old record of #1 hits that used to belong to Conway Twitty, Strait is a true revolutionary in music despite being a traditionalist in terms of his vocal sound.

Another great country music artist who mastered a familiar sound his audience could look forward to, George Strait has become one of the most recognizable voices in the history of the genre.

Garth Brooks

In terms of modern country music, modern being defined as post 1990, few artists achieved the level of success that Garth Brooks did.

A talented vocalist who could sing soothing ballads or growl gravely power lines, he is as versatile as he is successful.

With over a dozen #1 hits on Billboard’s Hot Country singles chart, he’s an easy pick for one of the best male country singers ever.

Though he isn’t quite old enough to be considered a legend in the same right as some other names on this list, he’s destined for such a spot regardless.

And no matter how one views him, there’s no denying his record sales and chart-topping hits mean fans love his songs and his powerful vocal style.

Willie Nelson

An eclectic artist who blended pop, jazz, and folk into his unique style of country music, Willie Nelson has topped charts and sold plenty of albums throughout his storied career.

While he broke into the country music scene by selling his songs to established artists, Nelson was always destined to gain recognition.

His unique sense of rhythm and unmistakable tenor range helped him stand out from the crowd, and earned him a spot as one of the best male country singers ever.

Aside from maybe his iconic braids and “Trigger” guitar, Willie Nelson is known best for his soothing vocal style. It’s made him a living legend, and an easy entry on our list.

Alan Jackson

Even when pop-country rose to prominence in the 90s, a few artists stuck true to the traditional sound of the genre – and among them was Alan Jackson.

Alan Jackson combined the carefree youth of a fresh face in country music with a voice and style that encompassed the greatness of generations passed.

There’s a lot of accomplishments to his name, including chart-topping hits and soaring album sales. Another star destined to be a legend, if he isn’t there already, Jackson is a true great in the genre.

His vocals have been used to talk about love, small town America, healing nations, and breaking hearts – all with a soothing tone and timbre fans clamor for.

Tim McGraw

Another singer who rose to prominence in the 1990s, Tim McGraw was someone who balanced a vocal style of pop country and traditional country.

His tenor vocal range and memorable twang have captivated audiences as he’s sang about life, death, love, and the good old days. McGraw’s vocal style mixes twang and grit, showing he’s a versatile performer in his voice timbre as well as his song styles.

While he ranks lower than some others on this list in terms of both his ordering and overall score, McGraw is one of the best male vocalists that country music has ever seen and will no doubt be remembered as a legend.

Merle Haggard

Called the Poet of the Common Man, this Okie from Muskogee was known as much for his iconic voice as he was his lyrical mastery.

A rebel in every sense of the term, Haggard maintained a devotion to his country roots throughout his career. He embraced the old-school style even as radio stations focused more on contemporary pop-country acts.

Haggard sang about the trials of being a working man, the legend of Bonnie and Clyde, and how to get on his “fightin’ side.”

Another true legend that left the country music world a few years back, his legacy remains, and his impact is still felt on the industry to this day. His unmatchable vocal talents are missed by many fans.

Vince Gill

He has a vocal range that could make opera singers jealous, and a soulful tone that lends itself perfectly to country music and its closely associated genres.

From bluegrass to gospel, Gill has lent his iconic vocals to many different songs both covers and originals throughout the years.

He’s also dominated country radio throughout multiple decades, combining an adherence to country fundamentals while still managing some very successful crossover appeal.

From his time as the lead singer in country-rock band Pure Prairie League to his time as a solo artist, Gill’s pipes have helped him reach high levels of success.

Though his blistering instrumental skills may sometimes overshadow his vocals, his delicate control of vibrato and precise riffing make him an easy choice on our list of best male country singers.

What Makes a Great Male Country Singer?

man with black guitar

Image via Pixabay

As we mentioned, there is some subjectivity in play when it comes to what makes a person a great singer. Sure, we can judge a vocalist’s ability to hit pitches and do so with good timbre. But what makes them a true vocal standout?

Sometimes it is being able to capture the essence of their genre. In a genre where weeping and wailing is as common as clinking glass bottles together and enjoying a good time, vocalists need to be exciting, captivating, and noteworthy.

Their vocal range isn’t as important as the way they use it – and qualities like vibrato or riffing aren’t crucial in general, but only when applied at the right time.

When used at the right moment to accentuate a line or even a single word, there’s a great appeal to these techniques. They’ve helped build the traditional sound of country music.

Having respect for those traditions is great – but showing crossover appeal at the same time is even better.

All these characteristics can be found in the best male country singers out there. And anyone looking to enjoy some great country songs should check out the catalogs of any singer on this list.

The Top 10 Best Actors of All Time

Great acting occurs when an individual is able to fully-control how he portrays both his inner and outer self.

In order to rise in success in this profession one must learn to reach deep within themselves, learning how to become multiple different characters in the never-ending process of training, improving and growing.

What Makes an Actor on of the Best Actors of All Time?

What does a man need to do to be considered one of the best actors of all time you ask?

Well, let’s get into it, shall we?

Since the dawn of age men and women have been acting, either throughout their daily lives or as a profound profession. From great actors to people we wish had never gotten in the business, there are certain personality traits that differentiate a good actor from a truly great one.

How We Chose Our Ratings

Well as one can imagine, creating this list took quite a bit of thought, effort and research. And I still know with 100% certainty that this list was not able to encompass even close to everyone who I wanted to put on here.

It is so hard to narrow down on a choice few “favorites” because each of the individuals both listed above and the ones that weren’t able to be listed have an enormous amount of uniquely brilliant qualities that help them to stand out from the rest.

These actors have worked amazingly hard to reach the status that they have achieved today, and for that they should all be appreciated and recognized.

I mean come on, just because I think some of these actors are the best in the world doesn’t mean that this is the general consensus with the rest of the world. I attempted to leave my bias at the keyboard and chose the men above in a manner that made sense to anyone trying to decipher where the ratings come from in this article.

However, I recognize that both my age and the generation in which I grew up also helped to shape where my top picks were coming from.

Each of these ratings stem from serious cinematic research and consideration so I hope you enjoy!

Top 10 Best Actors of All Time

Alright, here it is. Below you will find my personal list of best all time actors. Each of the men listed here have inspired thousands both on and off screen.

Each person listed out here has made a generous contribution to society through their entertaining roles. Sometimes the most important jobs out there are the ones that can help you to forget about all the wrong and hate going on in the world for just a moment. The acting that each of these men portray throughout their cinematic careers is quite advantageous, with many of them still going and being featured in the box office.

1. Tom Hanks

This versatile actor has spent decades becoming emotionally synchronized and authentic with the characters he has to play. This unique man 100% devotes himself to his profession,

My absolute favorite movie that he has starred in thus far is the 1996 mermaid romance titled Splash. Top Hanks plays a dashing devil who finds himself head over heels (or should I say tail over blonde mermaid hair) in love with this half-woman named Madison.

2. Robert DeNiro

Undeniably one of the greatest actors of all time who began his bad boy reputation in his first movie Mean Streets, which came out in 1973 and gained fame for his role in Bang the Drum Slowly which also came out that same year.

He got an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role he played in The Godfather and received multiple other Academy Award nominations over the years for his different films. This highly talented man who is known for his brutal, violent, and angry characters has also earned 4 Golden Globe nominations

He is one of the top 5 highest grossing actors of all time, with the only other African American actors on the list being Eddie Murphy. His net worth alone is over $150 million.

4. Jack Nicholson

This man is so much more than the crazy person he portrays in one of his most famous films, The Shining. This legend has been nominated for an Oscar 12 times and nominated for awards in 5 different decades, which is more than any other male actor out there.

Nicholson is a multi-talented man as he has directed films, written screenplays, and acted on-screen for over 13 years before he caught his big break and became famous in Easy Rider in 1969.

5. Denzel Washington

This Academy Award-winning African-American actor, producer and director is best known for his pivotal roles in movies such as Malcom X, Glory and The Hurricane.

This talented character actor is known for his perfect portrayal of difficult roles and positions during the course of history. Since the 1980s this man has been appearing on our television in some form or fashion through television commercials and different programs until he caught his big break in his successful war drama movie Glory in 1989.

Denzel was even named the Sexiest Man Alive by People Magazine in 1996. He is the only black actor other than Sidney Poitier to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

6. Robin Williams

(Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images)

One of the greatest comedians and actors to walk this Earth. The first film that this brilliant man starred in would be Popeye in 1980, with the film achieving high success. His talent shone through for multiple decades as this man’s voice became a staple for family movies nationwide.

The energy that Williams was able to bring on every set that he worked on was said to inspire everyone around him. This man was able to move millions and teach valuable life lessons through laughter and love. His noble acting will be remembered for centuries to come as his movies such as Goodwill Hunting, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Dead Poets Society, and even the Disney classic Aladdin.

7. Johnny Depp

Mandatory Credit: Photo by James Gourley/REX/Shutterstock (8876557d)Johnny Depp introducing his film ‘The Libertine’Glastonbury Festival, Day 2, UK – 22 Jun 2017

Mr. Depp is undoubtedly one of the most versatile actors of all-time. This Kentucky born man dropped out of school at the early age of 15 to pursue his passion for music with this garage band.

He caught his first big break when he worked with director Tim Burton in 1990 and played Edward Scissorhands. Since that movie, he has worked as a somewhat dark actor performing in surprising yet cryptic cinematic roles.

Over the years he has stolen the show on more than just a handful of movies. Known for his elaborate passion and eccentric energy, this actor is by far one of my flamboyantly freakish favorites.

8. Leonardo DiCaprio

Breaking the hearts of women since his show-stealing performance in the Titanic, DiCaprio is the ultimate Hollywood heartthrob. This man has had an extremely diverse career, however throughout every role that he has played – he has moved the hearts of millions.

9. Jim Carey

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Camilla Morandi/REX/Shutterstock (9040092h)Jim Carrey’Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond’ photocall, 74th Venice International Film Festival, Italy – 05 Sep 2017

This man has been making others laugh since before I can even remember. Known for his comedic performances and wild energy, Jim Carey has been warming the hearts of America for a few decades now.

Whether he be wearing a large green mask, or he is a goofy animal doctor with wild hair, this big goofy jokester has honed his craft and knows what he is doing both on and off screen.

10. Anthony Hopkins

Cast member Anthony Hopkins poses at the premiere of “Thor: The Dark World” at El Capitan theatre in Hollywood, California November 4, 2013. The movie opens in the U.S. on November 8. REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni (UNITED STATES – Tags: ENTERTAINMENT)

This classic Welsh actor was drawn to the theatre back at the early age of 17 when he was attending the YMCA. Many will recognize his bloodcurdling performance as Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs however he was performed in any more acclaimed films.

This multi-faceted acting man has spent his time in Hollywood extremely busy, as he has been in more movies and even television shows than I can even begin to count. His highest rated movies would be The Dresser, Shadowlands, Spartacus and The Remains of the Day.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Actors of All Time

All in all, the list above contains a solid assortment of actors from different time periods, genres and races.

No certain actor trumps all the rest, however when picking which men would make the cut there were certain key qualities that I took into account, because I feel that every great actor should have mastered these aspects.

Personality and Charisma: A performer needs to be charming both on and off camera, because let’s face it, at the end of the day an actor’s personality is what’s getting them paid! Although have a naturally enjoyable personality isn’t required, it sure does help.

Confidence is also a particularly helpful performance enhancer. So long as one doesn’t overdo it and come off as cocky, it is nice to be around a professional who knows what they are doing and knows how to act like it.

Understanding of the Human Psyche: By understanding the psychology behind why certain individuals react in certain ways, intuitive actors are quickly able to conceptualize the behaviors of others. These humans could double as therapists because their professions are vested in the importance of human emotion.

Through their emotions on screen they have to try and evoke a feeling or emotion in us viewers, which takes a deeper level of understanding than many of us realize. These people generally care about humanity, and are usually passionate about world issues because they are able to empathize and understand human suffering on a different level than most.

Highly Imaginative and Emotionally Intelligent: Acting requires you to be extremely emotionally present, which can be extremely mentally, spiritually, and even physically draining. Successful actors help to hone their craft and combat exhaustion by using imaginative measures such as meditation, character development, and real-life situational training with other professionals.

Eager to Constantly Grow and Learn: Actors are people who are eager to explore life and don’t take anything but the greatest. Yearning to learn more, and constantly searching out ways to act better – these energetic spirits are constantly hard at work on something. Bouncing from one kind of project to another, these spirits rarely rest as they are constantly working on their next, most important venture.

These men are prepared to take a raw and hard scene and take it all that much further to enhance the overall cinematic effect. Actors constantly have to perform mental maintenance on themselves, as their very career depends on their ability to understand themselves. They ensure that their emotional performances come off as genuine and authentic, unafraid to go through the actual emotions that they character would have to endure.

Commitment to the craft is the key attitude for any highly-acclaimed actor.

Recommendation

Among the best manga websites for casual readers is Crunchyroll. While its database is limited, this site offers a selection of popular titles and is available on mobile devices through Google Play Store. Fans can enjoy reading for free if they are willing to accept the presence of ads. In the alternative, readers can enjoy their favorite titles ad-free for a small monthly subscription charge.

For experienced manga enthusiasts who are knowledgeable about manga titles and authors, the best choice might be Mangafreak. This site offered a huge database that included older titles that would be of interest to the most diehard manga fan. Its disadvantage to newcomers is that its user interface is clumsy and difficult for those who may not already know what they are looking for.

We would not recommend Mangapanda, Mangareader.net or KissManga because of the malware attacks experienced on these sites while browsing their features.
